Abnormal load travelling through Gillingham Friday 3rd September

There will be an abnormal load travelling through Gillingham on the night of Friday the 3rd September.
The National Grid vehicles (75 metres long) will leave Chatham Docks at approximately 10pm, accompanied by a police escort and rolling road closure.
It will travel along Pier Road, Sovereign Boulevard, Hoath Way A278 to the M2 Junction 4. It will then continue on the M2 to Junction 3 Bluebell Hill.

The new Premier Inn at Maidstone Road Rainham Kent is being called Gillingham East. Having opposed the building of the Hotel in the first instance, it is galling to see that Premier Inns are now trying to wipe Rainham off of the map.
Please show your support by joining us in opposing this name and calling on Premier Inns to rename the Hotel - Rainham Kent.

Cllr Mike O'Brien the Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Enforcement attended the Medway Community Day held at Rainham Girls School this morning with the Deputy Mayor Cllr Vaughan Hewitt. Lots of different community stalls were present, including Bee Keepers, Vegetable growers, Composting, Face Painting and lots of various activities for the children and adults alike.

Rainham Central Councillors Barry Kemp and Mike O'Brien have taken a birds eye view of their ward by taking advantage of the St Margarets Church open day when visitors were allowed up to the top of the clock tower.
Mike O'Brien said : "After the initial climb to the top of the tower, the views were, quite frankly breathtaking. We could see virtually the whole of Rainham Central and Rainham North, it was well worth the climb"

Packed full of supporters for this worthwhile Charity, the main objective of which was to meet fellow supporters and of course to raise much needed money for the charity.

Rainham Central Councillor Mike O'Brien visited the Mega Football Card Swap on Sunday afternoon at the St Matthews Church Hall. Organised by members of the congregation of St Matthews the event attracted hundreds of youngster, and adults, who wished to swap their football cards.
Paul Warren the main organiser said "It attracted lots of youngsters and it was a joy to see them interacting with each other whilst swapping and discussing their cards".

The Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community and Safety in Medway Mike O'Brien attended the simulated road traffic accident (RTA) display in Gillingham High Street this evening.
Partners from South East Ambulance, the Police and of course the Fire Service put on a superbly realistic RTA with real life volunteers realistically playing the part of the victims.
A large crowed gathered to watch the display, photo shows Mike with all of the team involved in the exercise.

The Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community and Safety Cllr Mike O'Brien addressed the Local Government Associations annual conference today. He was joined by the Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Local Government Bob Neil MP, David Frost the Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce and Cllr Paul Bettison the Chairman of the LGA with special responsibility for Local Government Regulation.
Mike's presentation covered the Estates Excellence Award Scheme that was piloted in Medway in November 2009.

Rainham Central Councillors Rehman Chishti MP, Barry Kemp and Mike O'Brien have presented St Margaret's Churchyard group of volunteers with a brand new petrol mower to assist them with their regular churchyard grass cutting.
The Councillors said : "The Church is such an integral and vibrant part of our community, the volunteers work extremely hard keeping the grass in the churchyard under control and we were pleased to have been able to assist them with this mower which we have paid for from our Ward Funds".

he Planning Committee have given permission for this development to now go ahead, subject to the main change that your Rainham Central Councillors have campaigned for, and that was a bungalow in place of the proposed house adjacent to number 41 Maidstone Road.
Your Rainham Central Councillors have fought a long campaign against this development and have attempted to get MHS Homes to consider Sheltered Housing. However, this was not to be the case.
In the meantime, MHS Homes are still appealing against the previous decision to build a house next door to number 41 and we have to hope that the Inspector does not grant this appeal.

Rehman Chishti MP for Gillingham and Rainham was guest of honour last night at the Annual Presentation evening for the Hollands and Blair Football Team. Here Rehman is the President of the Club and is pictured here with the Chairman Laurence Plummer and the Corporate Director Spencer Teachen.
Rehman presented prizes to the the team members and was given a warm welcome by all of the players and their guests.

Cllr Mike O’Brien became Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Enforcement last month.
He quickly wants to get a handle on the issues causing residents in all 22 wards the most concern and will spend the first 90 days visiting as many PACTS, Community Neighbourhood Groups and Residents Groups as possible to find out what their issues are at first hand.

This message has just been received from Kent and Medway Networks (The Link) -South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Trust (SECAmb) have announced details of this year's ‘Shaping the future of your ambulance service' days. These events give patients, members of the public, staff and people from organisations they work with a chance to hear from the Chief Executive, put questions to the directors, take part in group discussions about how to improve their services, and meet other people with an interest in health services.
This is the fourth year running they are holding these successful events, and this year there will be six (one in each local authority area) as opposed to the usual three, in order to enable more people to attend. As always, these are interesting, interactive events with lunch and refreshments provided. Read more...

Shoppers young and old queued to have the opportunity of meeting William, including students who had their photographs taken with him.

The Conservative Parliamentary Candidate Cllr Rehman Chishti was invited to speak to a packed meeting of the Federation of Small Businesses last evening at the Pembroke Centre in the University of Greenwich in Chatham Maritime. Rehman easily outshone his opponents in the first hustings of the campaign. The Conservative pledge to scrap the Labour employment tax of a 1% rise in National Insurance contributions was exremely well received.

HANDS has many clients who live in the Rainham Central area and provide an invaluable service to them.

Puffin Crossing on A2 by Guardian Court and Pump Lane

We are pleased to inform residents that work will start on installing the new Puffin Crossing by Guardian Court and Pump Lane on the A2.
Work is scheduled to start on March 29th, to enable these works to be carried out safely, it will be necessary to introduce the following measures:
1. Temporary 30mph speed limit on the A2 from 20m East of Elizabeth Court to 235m East of Guardian Court for the duratin of the works.
2. Road closure of Pump Lane at the junction with the A2 for exiting traffic for the duration of the works.
3. Complete road closure of Pump Lane at the junction of the A2 for up to 5 days during school half term time. A signed diversion will be provided to direct traffic along Beechings Way and up Bloors Lane to the A2.
4. Prevent parking on the A2 West of Marshall Road to 185m East of Guardian Court.

101 Maidstone Road Rainham loses Appeal

Rainham Central Councillors are pleased to announce that the Government Inspector has dismissed the appeal from the applicants of 101 Maidstone Road Rainham Kent who wanted to turn it into a fast food takeaway.
This followed petitions from the local residents and campaigning from the Rainham Central Councillors on residents behalf.

Rainham Central Councillors are pleased to announce that they have successfully bid for Arthur Road to be resurfaced. This has become necessary due to the recent exceptional cold spell.
It is hoped to commence the work around mid to late March and residents will be advised of the exact start date.

Rainham Central Councillors Reh Chishti, Barry Kemp and Mike O'Brien attended the site visit at the Marlborough Unit in Maidstone Road Rainham this morning to support their opposition to the proposed development my MHS Homes.
The matter will be on the agenda at the Planning Meeting this coming Wednesday 10th March.

The Deputy Mayor Councillor Barry Kemp, accompanied by his two Rainham Central colleagues Councillors Reh Chishti and Mike O'Brien were pleased to accept an invitation to attend the Sunday Worship at the Sikh Sri Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Byron Road, Gillingham today. The Deputy Mayor thanked the President of the Gurdwara for his kind invitation and he and his colleagues enjoyed a home cooked lunch afterwards.
The Gillingham Gurdwara was established in 1984 and this religious and community centre serves the Sikh community of Gillingham, Rainham, Sittingbourne, Sheerness, Canterbury and Dover. The Temple performs religious, marriage, birthday and about 15 festival ceremonies. Some 150 Sikh families use the centre for various activities, such as sports, mother tongue education and community welfare awareness information services.

Rainham Central Ward Councillors were pleased to have been able to assist 16 year old Rebecca Murrell of the 1st Wigmore Guides by giving her £500 to help her to travel to Sangam in India as part of the Girl Guides Centenary. The trip will give Rebecca the opportunity to work in a Community Project with local children.

A2 London Road Crossing by Guardian Court/Pump Lane

Rainham Central Ward Councillors Barry Kemp, Reh Chishti and Mike O'Brien have welcomed the news that consultation is now in progress on a proposed Puffin Style Pedestrian Crossing on the A2 by Guardian Court and Pump Lane in Rainham.
This follows a long campaign by Rainham Central Councillors and a petition from the residents of Guardian Court.
Road Safety Manager Bryan Shawyer said today "A suitable location has now been identified and it is proposed to install a Puffin type pedestrian crossing at this site. The PUFFIN (Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent) crossing is a signal controlled facility where pedestrian detection is used to automatically vary the length of the pedestrian period, giving pedestrians the time they need to cross. The system should also remove the irritation some drivers feel when stopped needlessly at existing crossings when there are no pedestrians waiting to cross.
Residents have been written to asking for their views.

Rainham Central Councillors added, we welcome this crossing, it is urgently needed, not only for the residents of Guardian Court but the many hundreds of pupils attending Rainham Mark Grammar School who who have to cross the A2 to go to school.

Mike O'Brien went to Holy Trinity Church Hall this afternoon to visit M.A.P.S (Mark's Activity Programme Service). The service delivered by Mark is Activity Sessions for People with Disabilities.
Mike saw for himself the positive input given by Mark and Carers and the obvious enjoyment of the clients. This programme runs weekly on a Tuesday afternoon and is supplemented by a similar group on Mondays and Fridays at Walderslade Baptist Church in Catkin Close Walderslade ME5 9HP.

After a night of sleeping out in the MHS homes car park, Rehman joined some of the campaign team, (from 8am - 1pm) for a morning campaign session in Gillingham North where they finished delivering the ward with the NHS surveys to local residents. After lunch the full campaign team campaigned in Rainham, many thanks to everyone who helped today in particular our Young Conservatives.

Councillor Mike O'Brien met today with the Police, PCSO's, Community Safety Officers and Housing Officers, all of whom deal with Rainham Central.
Various issues were discussed about the anti social behaviour that affects our area and ideas exchanged.
The consensus was that it was an extremely useful exchange of information and ideas and that we would meet on a three monthly basis in the future. This will of course be in addition to the PACT meetings.

Snow Clearance

Thank you to all residents for your patience and forbearing in this unusally cold snap that we have just experienced. Following determined and persistent efforts of your Ward Councillors the most important areas of the Shopping Centre, Car Park and Church were gritted. All major roads were cleared thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Councils Highway Team, many thanks to them.
Pavements are still icy, but we are sure that residents will understand that the main focus of the Highway Department is to ensure that the main routes are safely navigable.
Congratulations also to Arriva, I used the buses quite extensively on Monday and Tuesday and was pleased that they all seemd to be running within time.
Let us hope that the thaw comes soon, although it might be nice to have just a touch of snow for Christmas Day.
Final thanks to our Refuse Collectors, snow and ice did not deter them from picking up our rubbish, well done to all.

Road works affecting Rainham Central

The roadworks at the junction of Bloors Lane and A2 are likely to go on to the end of next week, weather permitting. They are constructing a Sewer/Drainage connection to the Howard school site.
In view of the snow that is forcast, it would perhaps be prudent to take a different route until the roadworks are completed.Certainly, the message must be PLEASE HAVE PATIENCE AND TAKE CARE!
The closure of Ambley Road is because a new Road Island is being constructed to prevent illegal right turns to the waste disposal site. This too should be completed by the end of next week. Read more...

Our Parliamentary Candidate Reh Chishti addressed a packed hall at Rainham School for Girls this afternoon. Sixth Form students from The Howard School for Boys, Rainham Mark Grammar School and Rainham School for Girls packed out the school hall this afternoon for a Political awareness session.
Reh outlined his plans for a Conservative Government and explained why students should vote Conservative. He was given a warm reception and many students asked afterwards how they could help his election campaign.

Councillor Mike O'Brien as Chairman of the Health and Adult Social Care OSC on Medway Council, accompanied by Councillor Silvia Griffin received a petition today from Mrs Christine Baker of the Medway Pensioners Forum calling for the reinstatement of the Hydrotherapy Pool at Medway Maritime Hospital.
Christine has been leading this campaign and says that "This pool was raised by public subscription and is a necessity as far as pensioners in Medway are concerned".
Mike will present the petition to both the Hospital and the Council in the New Year.

Councillor Mike O'Brien joined Santa's little helpers: Sharon, Allison and Clare selling cakes at the Mierscourt School Christmas Fayre yesterday.
Over £100 was raised on cake sales alone and the school is opitimistic for a grand overall total. Well supported by parents and of course, Father Christmas!

The residents of Marlborough House joined in the Children in Need activities last week and raised a whopping £100 for the charity.
The residents at Marlborough held a 'glitter evening'in aid of Children in Need. Everyone came dressed with something glittery. Manager Linda Cardwell said "The residents collected £100 for the charity. Entertainment was provided by Roy on the keyboards and we also laid on plenty of refreshments - beer wine & nibbles - which went down very well too!!!

Rainham Councillor's present Parkwood Community Centre with £32,000

Rainham Councillors supported the efforts of Rainham Community Centre in Parkwood Rainham Kent today, by donating a cheque for £32,000.
The Community Centre found that they were £32,000 short in their funding for new improvements to the Centre. If they hadn't been able to find the necessary funds, their Lottery grant would have been jeopardised.

The team took part in a Sheltered Housing Quiz two weeks ago when
all of the Sheltered Housing schemes in Medway took part in a special quiz night to celebrate the Full Of Life Old Peoples Day at Woodchurch House in Twydall. A successful evening on three counts: Over 80 participants, £93 contributed to the raffle and Longford Court won!

All of the Sheltered Housing schemes in Medway took part in a special quiz night to celebrate the Full Of Life Old Peoples Day at Woodchurch House in Twydall yesterday evening.

Deputy Mayor and Rainham Central Councillor Barry Kemp recently reviewed the arrival of a fleet of new buses that Arriva will be using in the Medway Towns.
Barry, pictured here behind the wheel of on of Arriva’s new fleet of Single-deck buses that will be used on the 132 Service from Chatham to Hempstead Valley, via Rainham.
The fleet of 16 brand new single-deck buses representing an investment of £1.85 million by Arriva, was launched by Barry in his capacity of Deputy Mayor of Medway, at a ceremony on the Parade Ground of the University of Kent on August 27th. Read more...

Mike visits Marlborough House

Mike visited Marlborough House in Rainham High Street today and met residents at their weekly coffee morning. Residents also presented a petition to Mike to present to the Full Council on the 10th September. Residents are concerned at plans to move their Care Manager.
Mike was also shown around the complex and promised to investigate their concerns.

As Chairman of the Health and Adult Social Care Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Mike was invited to the Joint Swine Flu exercise held at the Compass Centre in Chatham Maritime.
In a worse case scenario, the Compass Centre will be opened up to handle Tamiflu distribution on a major scale.
The exercise was attended by, amongst others, Marion Dinwoodie, Chief Executive NHS Medway, Eddie Anderson the Chairman of NHS Medway, Dr Alison Barnett the Director of Public Health and representatives from Medway Council and the Community Health Partnership. Volunteers provided a steady flow of worried Flu Buddies, collecting Tamiflu on behalf of their fictitious friends.
Mike said after the exercise " I was encouraged to see all of our Partners working in cooperation, the Health Professionals are forecasting a POSSIBLE return of Swine Flu in the Winter and it is encouraging to see that plans are in place to ensure that the people of Medway are adequately catered for. Obviously this was an exercise and we are all keeping our fingers crossed that a worse case scenario doesn't happen."

MORE GREAT NEWS!Following many complaints from residents of Woodside about speeding traffic,your Rainham Central Conservative Councillors are pleased to announce that after successfully securing £30,000 of funding, the promised Solar Powered Speed Warning Signs are now in full operation in Woodside, Wigmore.
We will of course continue to monitor the situation and will take whatever steps are necesssary to make our ward a safe environment.

Barry to the rescue!

Mrs Gregory's lock on her door broke and was replaced. Unfortunately, it was the wrong type of lock. A 'Back Door' type of lock was fitted to a front door.
She was treated quite unsympathetically for about 7 months by officers who couldn't really appreciate the problem. Her family had even offered to pay for the correct lock to be supplied and fitted. An offer that was declined After Barry intervened on her behalf, officers inspected again and decided that a new front door, complete with a proper lock should be fitted after all. Read more...
Barry and Mike attend the Queen's Garden Party

Barry Kemp (as Deputy Mayor) and Mike O'Brien were honoured to be invited to the Queen's Garden Party (in the company of the Mayor of Medway Councillor David Royle) at Buckingham Palace on July the 14th. The previous week had been a complete washout and Barry and Mike were very much relieved that the sun broke through at 3pm and continued for the duration of the Garden Party. The Duke of Edinburgh spoke to Barry, asking him about the Mayoral Chain that he was wearing.

Proposed Hotfood Takeaway at 101 Maidstone Road Rainham

Mike O'Brien presented three petitions on behalf of local residents opposing the proposed takeaway at 101 Maistone Road to the Full Council last Thursday.
Your Rainham Central Councillors are pleased to report that Officers have REFUSED permission.
Our sincere thanks to the petitioners and to all of the local residents that signed the petitions.
One note of caution, the applicants could go to appeal, we will have to wait and see.
Rest assured that your Rainham Central Councillors will keep a constant vigil on any proposals that affect local residents.

Reh and Mike visited Geoffrey's stall at the Craft Fayre held in the Dickens Centre in Chatham Dockside over the Easter period. The photograph shows the superb original painting of Gillingham High Street (circa 1955).

Derwent Way PACT

Rainham Central councillors Rehman Chishti, Barry Kemp and Mike O'Brien along with the police, local residents, and the Headteachers of the Howard and Rainham school for girls attended a public meeting in Rainham, which helped setup a PACT for the area, as a means of getting all the parties working together in dealing with community safety issues.
After the meeting the Rainham Central councilllors said 'We are delighted to see residents from all nearby local roads and the Headteachers, it is important to work together in resolving COMMUNITY SAFETY ISSUES. The PACT process works well, in getting communities to come together along with the police and councillors in resolving these day to day community safety issues. Rehman and Mike visited the Rainham Farmers Market, held at the Millenium centre, where they met with stall holders and saw at first hand the local goods for sale providing excellent value for money.

Rainham Central councillors visited Rainham bereavement group and met with the founder of the group Mrs Sharp. The Rainham Central councillors had given the group £500 from their ward improvement funds, which enabled the group to purchase essential equipment for the running of the group.

Rainham Central Conservative Councillors Organise Community Meeting

Residents turned out in force to a meeting arranged by Councillor’s Rehman Chishti, Mike O Brien and Barry Kemp, at the Millennium Centre Rainham, to discuss Community Safety. They were joined by representatives of the police and officers from Medway Council.

Local Councillors and police hold successful public meeting in Parkwood

Parkwood residents attended in large number a community safety public meeting held, by their local Councillors, Cllrs Howard Doe, Cllr, Roy Hunter, Cllr David Royle Cllr Kemp, along with the Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Cllr Rehman Chishti, and the Police representative.
The meeting was designed with the aim, of reassuring local residents, that the incident that had happended in Parkwood green a week, before was a one of incident, and was being fully investigated. Also the meeting was very productive in listening to the views of local residents, as well as informing local residents, of the actions the Council and police along with other organisations are taking in making the area safe.
